He withholds to protect

One of my New Year’s Priorities is to read the bible in a year. I have yet to read the entire bible, and even recently discovered that there is a book called Nahum I wasn’t aware existed… #TrueConfessions.

I got the Daily Walk Bible in order to help keep me on track with this goal and even though it’s only day two, I am constantly amazed at the reminder that God withholds things from us out of love and protection.

When God placed Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, He told them everything was theirs, except one tree. This wasn’t a problem for them, until satan got Eve to focus on the one thing she couldn’t have.

Every time I read this and am reminded of this fact, I kick myself. How can I forget this precious lesson? The Lord told them not to touch the tree of knowledge of good and evil because He knew it was what was best for them. He loved them and wanted to protect them from what the tree represented.

When we focus on all that God has done for us, all the blessings we are surrounded by and He has gifted us, we walk in thankfulness at His abundant provision.

But when we begin to focus on that one thing He has withheld from us or has asked us not to touch, that is when we stumble and fall. We become so obsessed and attached to the idea of that one thing, that we lose sight of the garden of provision He has placed us in.

His good gifts and abundance far outweighs the things He withholds, and still we choose to focus on what He is withholding.

Sometimes when I get in this rut, I become angry and frustrated. “Why won’t you give me this thing, God!”

But what I so quickly forget, is that God knows better than I do. If He is withholding, He has a very very very good reason for it. A reason that is filled with Love & Protection. He wants to give me good gifts. He wants to give me the desires of my heart. But He does not want to give me gifts that are masked as good, but will ultimately hurt me more than I can understand in the moment.

He does not withhold because He is cruel or delights in our hurt desires. He withholds because He loves us, sees the bigger picture, and is protecting us from something that we cannot see.
